Make a one minute appropriation film purely from adverts ripped from the internet which attempt to subvert consumerism in some capacity, be it humour, radical politics, irony...etc.
What is an appropriation film ?
This basically means to borrow clips from other videos to create your own.
My idea-
When i was watching adverts on-line trying to come up with an idea i kept playing and repeating clips over and over again hoping something would come to me.
when i was watching this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyyNCKsMSc4 playing and pausing it so often made it look like the people were dancing, so i decided to make it look like people in charity adverts wernt actually sad and they were at a music festival.
I didnt really have much intent when making this video other than too make it look like they were dancing, How ever when i was editing i felt really bad making it as these people are suffering and im kind of taking the micky out of them, so i asked my flat mates whether it was too offensive to go on making the video, to which they said.
' I dont think its too offensive it dose what the brief says and dosent make me what to give to charity as there having a good time so dont need my money '
' i dont find it offensive as most people in poor countries arent aware of any life other than theres so they are actually having a good time'
' i feel kind of bad becuase i spend so much money of festivals and i could be giving it too these people '
So i decided to continue making the video as it had a much more thought provoking topic than i originally intended.
here is the finished video
When it was shown in class some of the comments were that it was quite daring and political.
i now think i could have edited it differently to make it more shocking and in your face to get more of a message across.
It is good the way you tested out what you were doing on other people and have reflected on what you could have done to give it even more impact. Maybe more you could develop here... perhaps for your photography project if not for the film???
