Maps and journeys - Planning progress

I thought i would upload all of our planning and testing that we have done so far  on here to keep it organised and all in one place.

Synopsis

installation piece biased around the the spiritual journey of the after life. Using sound, light and visuals we want to take the viewer on an emotional journey to what we have researched the after life to be like. To experience the spiritual Journey  we want to use white lights that slowly fade in and out to black, this will over all be a calming experience as thats what most people described in my research. We might threw the odd shilloette of a person in as some people said they saw figures, how ever we want to focus mainly on the lights and the sound to create a calming effect. The sounds we will use will be  binoral so we can create an all round feeling in the person. we will have really heavy bass tones so that the person can feel it vibrating through them as well as some kind of calming music and sounds.

Visual style

I found a short animation about not fearing death and i really liked the colours the used in the shot bellow and think some thing similar to this would look really good in our video

The colour pallete they used in this video is
( for some reason when i upload this to my blog it changes the colours of the image but if you type the codes on the colours into the colour selector on photoshop you can see an accurate colour)

I like the colour scheme and style as its quite bright and clearly represents the light but its not to harsh that it hurts the viewers eyes and would give quite a calming effects

Learning agrement

Timing plan ( to make sure sound and visuals fade in at the same time )

0-20seconds - fade in from black/no sound to full light and sound at half
20- 40 seconds lights start to move around and sound fades to full
40 - 60 seconds faint shilloetes of people apear, sound changes frequency slightly
60 -90 seconds slowly fades back out in to black but not fully still small point of light , sound gets quieter
90-100 seconds stays small and quite
100 - 120 fades back in to full , same with sound
120 - 140 more shillouetes appear , sound changes slightly
140 -150 quickly pulls out to nothing

Hannah is in charge of sound and i am in charge of the visuals she sent me a message last night about the things she has done so far on sound and her ideas on how we can present it.

What has been done so far…

By creating a “patch” I have been able to create tones of the frequencies 110Hz, 106Hz and 30Hz.
I mixed them together to pan the 110Hz to the left and 106Hz to the right. The 30Hz is centrally panned and this creates an overall frequency of around 34Hz. The feeling you get when you listen to it is dizziness and tiredness.

This is still a test and a working progress I’m going to try and make more frequencies and see which ones work best for what we are trying to achieve.

the presentation style is still a work in progress to be tested and discussed about some more.

WHAT TO DO NOW (other than whats in the schedule ) -
risk assment for displaying it
floor plan of how it will be displayed
sort out the presentation style !
things we need to build it
more tests on sound / visuals
make the box
make it loop
make the final out come

  1. I look forward to seeing some tests for the visuals. The colour pallette looks interesting. I think you need these before you start to do more work on the presentation as you don't really know what you have yet and until you have some certainty it will be difficult to make a coherent plan.

If you have the material you can start to experiment with editing, then move versions into different formats, presentations and structures. You could waste a lot of time imagining a structure that just won't work with the material otherwise.

So my advice is to change your schedule around a bit, go asap to have some fun with cameras and see what images you can produce to create your calming effect then work on the presentation.

Also can you confirm that the sound is heard through headphones if you are working binaural?
