PTK - Studio shoot - Job Roles

The film industry provides a lot of job and different sectors  from art directors, casting agents, budgeting assistants and producers. The bigger the set you are on the more staff and the more each categories is broken down into job roles, for example in the production side on a small shoot lile ours the producers would be in charge of casting, budgeting, finding location, organising schedules, hiring staff ETC how ever in bigger sets the producer would have to much work to do so casting goese to a casting agent, budgeting is done by an accountant ETC

see full list of all job rolls on film here http://creativeskillset.org/creative_industries/film/job_roles

For our set the main job roles we have and what they do are

Production designer - They are in charge of the over view of how the set is going to look, the costume / make up, props  and assisting with build construction . There main priority on in pre production is to come up with mood boards on how they visualise the room looking so they can discuss it with the DOP to make sure they are both on the same page. They will then work out the dementions of the set and  come up with a list of building materials and props which we then can go out and buy. On the shoot the production design will work close with continuity to make sure all the props and set are how they should be in each take.

Construction management - They are in charge of making sure we have the correct things to build the set Eg the flats and drills  as well as making sure they are put up correctly and safely to the correct dimensions.

producer - The producer is in charge of seeing the film from start to finish, they get a team together for pre , shoot day and post production. They control the over all organisation of the film organising shooting schedules, casting , budgeting, locations , risk assments , production hand books basically making sure there is enough paper work and planning for the shoot to run as smoothly as possible. In post production they over see the edit slightly giving note to the editor about what they thing works best. They also contact a distributor and marketing team.

lead editor - They are in charge of organising the editing team, gathering the paper work from the shot to originsing the rushes and come up with a rough edit. They over see the whole edit process with the other edit team members to make sure they are working to schedule.

production assistant - There job is to help the producer in the pre production process, all though they get not as much creative control as the producer they can help on on things like organisation and paper work etc . They basically take some of the work pressure off the of the producer as trying to organise everything and they do all the paper work for it in such a small amount of time can become stress full.

camera operator - They are in charge of helping to set up camera and tripods and setting up the technical requirements on the camera. They are the person who dose most of the filming how ever additional filming will be done by the assistnat.

camera assistant - The camera assistant helps the camera operator plot out the shots and works the additional cameras if needs to. They also help with replacing broken bits of equipment / getting replacement batteries and sd cards .

casting director - They are in charge of finding an actor, they orginise things like contacting agents, arranging auditions, auditioning the actors and contacts the chosen actor to tell them they have the part and give them schedules and characters bios / scripts.   I will go into more about the casting process in the post about the directors work shop

Director - The director gets most of the creative vision on the film. In pre production they work with the prodction designer ( art department ), DOP ( lighting and camera department ) and the casting director. They do things like story boading and shoot plans to they way they interpert the script and want it to be filmed. They work with the DOP to make sure the lighting and framing plans are along the same visions as they were thing. And help to cast an actor as its ok with having a good actor but a bit useless if th director can not director them. They have to be a convident leader in having so much control of how the creative aspects of the film look and be able to make quick decision. On the shoot day the directors main role is to work with the actor and make sure they block out the process and get across what they want to see. In the edit the director helps go though the rushes to make sure the best shots are picked and that its going the way then saw it.

i will go into more about this role in the post about directors work shop we had.

First AD  - they help the day run smoothly by super vising all production activities and orginising the cast and crew. They make sure the crew know what they are doing or deliver messages from the director so the director can focus on the acting. They supervise the schedule to make sure it isn't running over time and cast are arriving when they should. As well as making sure when it comes to a take every one is quiet and in there places ready for them to shout action. The are a massive help to a director so they do not have to worry about the organisation of the shoot and can focus on the creative aspects.

Continuity ( script superviser ) - They watch the an external monitor to look out for errors in continuity Eg actor dose a differnt movement in one shot to the other   they do this to make sure in the edit it is easy to edit and consistant for example if an actor picks up a bag in one shot but isnt holding it in the other shop it will look odd and if not spotted on the day there may not be any footage to replace that shot.

Director of photography ( cinematographer ) - They work with the director to create the visual identity of the film. In pre production they mainly work closely with production design and lighting to make sure they visual ascetics of the film look the way they should. On shoot day they walk through the blocking with the director to then organise the positioning the set design and the lighting/camera. Most DOPs have there own distinct style and way they like things to look.

colour correction editor- They change the colours of the finished edit to make them either all match up or to give the film a unique style, for example in our film the colour grader will have to make sure the prison is all lowered to the same saturation.

sound recorder - In pre production they find example of music they want to use and find out legal and copy right information they may need. On the day of filming they hold the microphone in the best position to get the most sound and lest out for any back ground noise and errors. They also record a 2 minute room tone to be used in the edit. In post production they will go through and recored any folly sounds they missed during filming.

sound editor - The sound editor is responsible for doing a radio edit of the footage to make sure all the dialogue and sounds play at the correct timings and beats. They will then go through and compress the audios to make sure they are the correct loudness Eg no more then -10db in the uk so bangs and guns will be on -10db but conversations will be mixed to about -15 . They will also get rid of any excess noise and add effects if necessary as well as mixing in the music.

visual effects editor - They are in charge of adding any visual effects to the film, they work in mainly affter effects of 3d modeling to add create unique visuals that could not be created in real life. in our film the VFX editor will be in charge of over laying the videos onto the green screen.

grip - the grips work as part of the electrical department on the lighting and technical requirements for the film. The unload all the equipment, rig it and set it up and position it through out the day. Some tasks they do include pushing the dollies about, making sure wires are taped down, setting up equipment

lighting - In pre production the lighting crew work with the dop to create lighting plans and floor plans, they also create a list of technical requirements to give to the producer for the to hire. On shoot day they are organise and arrange the lights to give the effect they were aiming for .

distributer - there job is basically to hire a team to distribute and market the film from things like getting it into the festivals, posters, promotions etc we do not have a distribution team how ever we have thought about it

as our film is 90 seconds like which is longer than a normal advert it wouldnt be show as a television advert but more used on websites and youtube.

screen writter -  The screen writer either comes up with an initial idea and takes it to a producer or gets and idea from a producer and creates a screen play for the film. They have to be high in creative writing and deadlines as the rest of pre production can not really go a head until a rough draft at least of the script is done.

storyboard artist   -  they take the shot list from the director and draw it up into pictures.

I will go into more detail about my job roles, how the pre production hand book should be done and the production work flow in  a following post.
