PTK - Studio shoot - what a producer does - legal

one of the main bits of legal work a producer deals  with is liability

liability is your legal risk and exposure, to avoid this you are best to continuously consult a lawyer as well as make sure you know what you could be liable of.

you need to make sure you

  • draw up correct contracts for cast and crew
  • obtain the correct rights for copyrighted material
  • asses any damages that may happen
  • fill out a detailed risk assement
  • own the correct insurance
when it comes to copy right there are some loops round it one of them being the right of fair use.

fair use is freely using portions of copyrighted material for the purpose of commentary or criticism.  this means if you wanted to use something in a film say a line from a poem as long as it was referenced correctly and used for criticism it would be ok, but if you took it and claimed it as your own you would be in trouble.
