Dance - Cameras

With stores cameras only going up to 60fps and most of them in 720p  to get the kind of shot we were looking for simon sugested we rent one from another company as we should let the fact store dont have the requirements we need stop us.

We then went to a company called onsight explained our film and what we wanted out of it ,  and they said from there cameras to get a high quality slow mo shot would be the red one mx.

As we are student we could have the camera, a lense adaptor so we could use lenses from stores , a pro evf ( view finder type thing )  and 3 memory cards for £200 for 2 days + 2 days transport. Which we didnt thing was too bad compared to how much we would have to pay to film it under water.

As i have never used one of these before and am in charge of camera i took the time to reserch in how to use it and what its pros and cons would be.

Apart from the obvious that it is high res high frame,  i found out

its pretty heavy, which for the kind of shots we want and the fact im not popeye  could be a problem
they can take a while to boot up
 a bit temperamental
a whole lotta GB  like can be 100gbs in a days filming, transfer times would be a pain in the ass !
and the computures power to process all of that in the edit is going to need alot
generally need a lot more time patients and know how than i have

over all as much as i would love to use one maybe we could look at other cameras

I said to everyone im not really bothered by what kind of camera we use or how we get it as long as it can get the shots we want and make it look good. This means hq slow mo and a shallow depth of field

mollie suggest we use he friends  panasonic gh4, we could get 96fps in 1080 with this which is great, i know its a Dslr and what not but for this film and its outcome being the internet its not a massive problem + its small and light weight so we could easily work between dancers and move around with it.  Alot of my friends have like stead cams and jibs and things like that for the own personal slr that i could easily get my hands on to get some nicer panning and moving shots.

ive read  fairly mixed reviews about the cameras 96fps capability tho, mainly that it wasnt very sharp and at times not very fluid

how ever it dose do 4k at 60fps which is said to be very good, and 4k 60fps is better than 720 60 fps for sure

at like i said At the moment were just aiming for youtube

I really dont want to film at 720 but if we cant borrow that camera to get slow mo that is our only option
:(

As most of our class has the 700d we could use thoose too at a last minute option  as they are 720 60fps,  then we could have multi angle get things done a bit faster ?  but if im  filming 720 we might as well use an actual camera

all of these numbers and things to think about is hurting my head , im started to think it dosent really matter what or how we film it on like the latest apple advert has bee filmed on an ipad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LVf4wA9qX4, so if we get the content and the dance to look good and get all the shots right  it can still look good no matter what

  1. Hi Laura I have been looking at the Sony FS7 which does up to 180 fps at 1080p - see if the camera hire place rents it out - it has a layout like the EX3 but just come out. This is the camera to hire if you can find it. Here's the link;

I think you could still produce a fabulous piece of work at 720p if 60fps is slow enough for you. The important thing is to light it well and probably dramatically so the images are strong and stand out strongly from the background. Better to work within your kit limitations and concentrate on the proper creative stuff. Backlighting would be good for having a stark black background.
