Maps and Journeys - film / theatre inspiration

Over the summer i went to a lot of plays and films, here are some of them that i thought could provided some inspiration for this project.

Ramore -

Ramore was a 5 minute dance piece that i saw at Edinburgh fringe festival, it was about 2 people trapped in each others love. The thing that interested me the most about this piece was how important the viewing experience was to them. It was performed in a pitch black room ( which once entered was locked so no one could come in or out ), in the middle of that room was a steal prison, no bigger than 15 ft ³,  which the dancers performed inside. To view the dancers there were several viewing spots that the audience could look through. These spots were just big enough to look through and had to be slid open like the little hatches on prison doors, as there were no assinged spots the viewer could walk round and watch them from any angle allowing them to experience the whole dance in a unique way.

It was a very intense and immersive piece for the viewer that could have only got the emotion across so well due to the performance space they chose to use.
I like the idea of having one on one interaction, in such a small space as it allows the viewer to feel a part of the dance not that there just watching it, and i would like to look into doing something similar with my project.

You once said  yes -

You once said yes  was a performance piece i saw at Edinburgh fringe festival. It is an immersive one on one play that takes the participent on a physical and metaphorical journey around the streets of Edinburgh. The main concept of the show is what ever happens in the next hour and a half of your life you have to say yes too. When they show first started out it originally intended to push people as far as they were willing to go with the whole ' say yes' thing.  At the start of the original show you think you are seeing a normal play but no cast arrives, there is one other audience member who convinces you to say yes and go on a walk with them, throughout the next hour of walking around Edinburgh you not only get to explore the city but you bump into unique characters and situation to say yes too you spend about 20 miniutes talking to these characters about there life and your life and it allows you to develop your own character and reflect on your life. As the original performance was to test how far you would say yes to so if you stuck it out to the end you met and very depressed man which after talking to you for a while  say ' if i asked you to kill me would you say yes '  which at that point most people say no, which it is then explain to them that the cast didn't miss the play you thought you were seeing and infact the whole play and journey you have just been on is all about you.

As this got quite allot of press and reviews they have to change it year by year, it is now less about how far are you willing to say yes to and more about character development of how you think and feel about the crazy characters that you meet on your journey around edinburgh.

I also saw another play called You me bum bum train which follows a similar concept, you enter a building and go from room to room, in each room there is a difference performance going on where you get to sit and interact with the characters, which by the end makes you think about your life and your self taking you on some kind of journey.  Unlike Once you said yes you me bum bum train is very surreal. Rather than walking round the streets and meeting strange character, each room is set up and designed to look differently eg one minute your in a prison the next your in a morgue or a school, it is like your walking from one dream into another.

I think adapting or creating  something like this could make a good idea for my project as it explores both the physical and metaphorical  meaning of journey

Altered states -

This is a film created in 1980, it is about a scientist  who conducts experiments on himself with a hallucinatory drug and an isolation chamber that may be causing him to regress genetically.  During his hallucinations he goes on many mental journeys. http://youtu.be/40FiMy-ak0k?t=1m4s

I like the style that these hallucinations are shot in as there quite surrealist and trippy.

mr nobody -

mr nobody is a film about a boy who has the ability to see his future. When his parents are taking a divorce he is left with a tough decision of wether to go with his mum or his dad, the film shows  extracts from throughout his life and what it would be like if he went with either parent or just ran away and lived on his own. I liked this film alot as i think alot about how life would be different if i had taken different chances when i had the opportunity too, and think this would be a good topic to cover in my project. I also like that the film did not follow a linear time line and went backwards and forwards to different parts of his life. This at some points made the film confusing but interesting to watch.
