PTK - Studio shoot - What a producer does - Idea development

The idea development stage is about bringing an idea to its full maturation and finilising a script. It is also when the producer will go out and find financing for the film. Ideas can be original or developed from other materials eg novels.  Each of these forms of idea have there own set of legal work that comes with them. 

here are the main processes that go into developing an idea

•  finding ideas + studying scripts  - The best way to come up with an idea is to find something that interests you as it is going to become a big part of your life and you dont want it to weigh you down. Then you should study other scripts that have been made this will give you a good idea how to format your script, work out beats  etc and create the over all map of the story 

• obtains rights to material - If the screen play you are working on comes from an exesting material you will need to get the rights to it before going any further so you stand on a good legal ground. When getting rights for the film you will need to work out whither you need exclusive or non exclusive rights, how long you will need the rights for, who is legal right holder and how to contact them, do you need world wide right or perticual, do you need the life rights of a person , can you just use film festival rights which are usually free but not suitable for other forms of distribution, have you added future technology rights so up and coming technology can not use it wit out your pomision. all of these things should be gone over with an entertainment attorney and a lawyer. 

• Give script feedback - on of the best ways to give feedback is to have a table read, this is where you get some actors to red it out loud as they would on the day this allows you to clearly see where the script is going wrong and how to improve it 

• create a log line - this is a specific sentence or 2 that discribes the protagonist and the plot of the flim.  it include , a tone/ genre, protagnist and there motivation , the main incident of the film , the main conflict , there ultimate goal and the stakes  EG  The simpsons movie is a comedy animation where homer simpson, a typical american man, trys to save his town and win back his family. 

• create a proposal  - this is one of the main steps to getting funding for a film. it should be only a few pages long containing all the essential information, if the reader needs more information then you can supply it when necessary. It should contain an over view of the project, a comparison film  ( this is quicker way to explain you themes, genre, demographic , story , characters etc , a synopsis, investment particulars eg budget and how money will be raised , a background to the story , a statment of risk, a budget, legal disclaimers and a schedule  

• create a distribution plan - all though this will change through the process it is impotant to have one from the start so you know what to research and technical requirements. 

• presales - this is when you sell certain rights to your film in order to get funding for it. The best way to do this is to go to a sales agent who specialises in doing this. 

• finilase a checklist before producing - find out are there any other films like yours in production, am i right to make this film, what is the budget, can i raise the money, do i have the rights in writing , what format do i plan on shooting , do i trust the collabrators
